SOCIOLOGY 248

MODERNITY AND THE ANCIENTS

PROFESSOR GEORGE E. MCCARTHY

KENYON COLLEGE
OLOF PALME HOUSE

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This mid-level course will examine the relationships between classical Greek literature and politics and nineteenth- and twentieth century European social and political theory. The critical vision and imaginative insights of modern authors such as Schiller, Marx, Nietzsche, Freud, and Marcuse were all inspired by their understanding of the classical tragedies of Aeschylus and sophocles and the political theory of Plato and Aristotle. It is this interconnectedness between modernity and the ancients which will be closely examined.
