The Tempest

by William Shakespeare (mostly)

as performed at the Knox County Youth Shakespeare Camp, Summer, 2001

This production uses Japanese costumes and presents the play in a Japanese style. This works amazingly well.

Seven sprites are our guides and narrators.  (They also get to pinch Caliban when he needs it.)

Musicians provide music and occasional sound effects for the play.

The two "stars" of the drama -- Sarah (left) and Glynis (right).

The Shogun of Tokyo and the Emperor of Kyoto aboard ship, in a great storm.

The enchanter Prospero and his daughter Miranda.  To the right, the three spirits Ariel, chief servants of Prospero.

Caliban -- half man, half monster, all trouble.

Royal and noble castaways plot against one another, little suspecting that they are in Prospero's power.

The island is full of sprites, who watch everything and sing strange music.

The jester Trinculo falls over, and then in with, Caliban.

Stephano, the emperor's butler, has had a bit too from the keg of wine he washed ashore with.

Ferdinand (prince of Kyoto) and Miranda make each other's acquaintance.

Prospero gives his blessing on the marriage of Ferdinand and Miranda. He breaks his staff and drowns his book, renouncing his magical powers.

The big musical finale, sung to the tune of "Gilligan's Island". (The sprites are out of the picture at the right.)
