II. Course Introduction課程介紹/课程介绍/kèchéng jièshào

1. Objectives 目標/目标/ mùbiāo

The language pledge is essential for the success of the program. Please honor your pledge at all times.

CHNS 3201-3204 Intermediate Mandarin Chinese aims to help the learners to:

  1. comprehend and communicate in Mandarin Chinese at the paragraph-language level across the three modes of communication: interpretive, interpersonal and presentational,
  2. understand fundamental principles of the Chinese textual discourse and the 4 text types for both oral and written composition: description, narration, comparison and contrast, and explanation,
  3. begin to understand simple書面語 / 书面语 / shū miàn yǔ (“written Chinese”), a key marker for the formal register of the Chinese language,
  4. understand the philosophical ideas underlying some Chinese cultural phenomena, and
  5. develop language-learning strategies, and learn the skills to be an independent and resourceful life-long learner of Mandarin Chinese

2. Class web site 課程網站/课程网站/kèchéng wǎngzhàn
URL: https://segue.middlebury.edu/sites/chns3201a-l11
(The last three characters in the URL: the letter “l” for “language school” followed by the number “11” for 2011.)

Before accessing the Segue web site: registering your computer and getting your Middlebury NetID

All personal computers are required to register with the Middlebury network. Ignore the wireless signal when you boot your computer. (The “unsecure” wireless service is not recommended; the “secure” wireless service requires your Middlebury NetID and password.)? Plug in the network cable, and follow the prompts on your monitor to register your computer. (If you are not automatically prompted to register your computer, please visit this link for network registration: https://cmrc.middlebury.edu/registration/.) One of the steps of the registration process is to activate your Middlebury College account (you can also visit https://bat.middlebury.edu/activate/ to activate your Middlebury account). You will be prompted to enter your Midd ID # and your BannerWeb Personal Identification Number (PIN).? For “Midd ID”, enter the 8-digit number on your Middlebury College photo ID card. Your initial BannerWeb Personal Identification Number is the 6-digit “mmddyy” combination of your date of birth. You will get a username, which will also be your Middlbury NetID, and will be asked to create your password. You can use any public computers on campus in the libraries or computer/language labs with your NetID and password.

Please check your Middlbury College webmail account regularly for important messages for all language school students from the College. https://mail.middlebury.edu/

How to easily locate the class web site on Segue

When on campus, type “Segue” in the address bar of the web browser, and press the “Enter” key. When off campus, type http://segue.middlebury.edu instead. On the upper right corner of the web page, click on “Log in”, and enter your Middle-bury NetID and password. Click on “Portal” in the navigation bar on the right of the next page. You should see the class site “中級漢語 / 中级汉语 / Zhōngjí Hànyǔ (2011)” in the middle panel of the page now. If not, click on “Current classes” in the navigation bar on the left of the web page to bring up the class. If you still can not see the class, it is probably because the official Middlebury class list has not been updated to include you in the class.? You will need to email us and request to have you added to the class web site. Remember to include your Middlebury NetID in your email message.

Check the Segue class web site regularly

The weekly schedules, all lecture notes, text and vocabulary recordings, grading criteria, weekly section charts, weekly one-on-one charts, etc. will be posted on Segue.? You will need to print out the lecture notes (講義 / 讲义 / jiǎng yì) yourselves before class for preview purposes and for note-taking in class at the Main Library or the Armstrong Science Library in MBH (McCardell Bicentennial Hall) or at a computer lab or a language lab (Sunderland 121, etc.) at no charge. Each summer school student has a free-printing quota of 500 pages. You can check your count at http://papercut.middlebury.edu/app.

2. Required coursework 課程要求/课程要求/kèchéng yāoqiú

  1. Listen to the vocabulary recording and the text recording on the Segue web site, learn the new vocabulary and preview the lecture notes and the text for the following day’s daily quiz. To locate the recordings and the lecture notes, log in to the Segue web site. Click on “學習材料 / 学习材料 (xuéxí cáiliào) Study Materials.” Then click on the appropriate lesson in the drop-down menu. To download the mp3 files, you can right-click the link (PC) or use Ctrl+click (Mac), then choose “save as” to save them on your computer.
  1. Print out and handwrite the written assignments for vocabulary, grammar and listening or reading comprehension practice and turn them in to your drill-section teacher the following day All written assignments are also located under each lesson in the drop-down menu for “學習材料 / 学习材料 (xuéxí cáiliào) Study Materials” on the Segue web site.

  1. Actively participate in all kinds of classroom activities.
  1. Attend the 15-minute one-on-one conversation sessions in the afternoon. Speak as much as possible upon solicitation and actively try out new words and patterns.

  1. Except for week 1 and week 8, you will have two on-line pronunciation practice assignments every week, to be posted at http://lingtlanguage.com/2nianji/8138. You will get audio comments as well as a feedback sheet with your patterned errors. Go to the office hours to practice pronunciation. Self-monitoring and constantly correcting yourself is of the utmost importance to improving your pronunciation.
  1. Prepare for and do the 5 weekly oral exams to be held on Mondays during the 15-minute one-on-one sessions, starting the Monday of week 2. The topics can be found in the weekly schedules.

  1. Type-write the first draft of the 5 weekly compositions using 18-point font size and double spacing, revise it following the teacher comments in the feedback sheet, and hand-write the revised version using the Level 2 calligraphy grid located here: https://segue.middlebury.edu/view/html/site/chns3201a-l10/node/5967672. (link to be updated when 2011 web site becomes live)

All compositions must be revised to receive full credit. Bring a hard copy of your first draft to the 3rd period of classes on the due day (always due on Mondays) and hand it in to your drill session teacher. The mistakes and errors in your first draft will be marked but not corrected. You will also get a feedback sheet with comments when you get your first draft back.? If you have difficulty figuring out how to correct the mistakes, you can go to the office hours from 8:30 to 10:00 pm.? When you hand in your revised version, please remember to hand in your first draft and the feedback sheet as well.

IV. Others (其他 / qítā)

1. Learning tips 學習建議 / 学习建议 / xuéxí jiànyì for preview (預習/预习/yùxí):
Step 1: Listen to the recording of the vocabulary list in the textbook and study the characters while repeatedly listening to the recording.? When you are ready, do a self dictation of the words. Flash cards are handy.

Step 2: Listen to the recording of the text and study the unfamiliar words not listed in the vocabulary list in the textbook. At the same time, study the words listed in the grammar handout. To get ready for your vocabulary quizzes, you need to be able to write out from memory the words in the grammar notes, and to recognize all characters in the text.

Step 3: Study the sentence patterns and examples in the grammar notes.

Step 4: Reading the texts aloud for a few times will greatly help you understand the content of the texts as well as learning new vocabulary and sentence patterns.

Step 5: When you feel ready, do a self-paced dictation of the text, or just copy the text by hand.

Step 6: Listen to the “listening comprehension” recordings and see how much you understand. Once you have listened to it a couple of times, you can locate the passage in the Workbook and see how much you have comprehended. Listening comprehension is a part of the daily homework in weeks 1 to 4.

Step 7: If you have questions regarding the vocabulary, grammar points and/or assignments, etc, you can go to the office hours.

2. Tips for classroom learning (課堂學習 / 课堂学习 / kètáng xuéxí):

  1. Come to class well prepared and well rested.?
  2. Actively participate in all kinds of practice and activities.
  3. Jot down your grammar and vocabulary questions, and save them for after class.

3. Tips for daily quizzes (小考 / xiǎokǎo):

  1. All vocabulary quizzes have 3 parts: (1) transcribing a sentence (traditional and simplified versions will both be provided) into Pinyin, (2) 3 T/F questions based on the text, with the questions read twice; and (3) character dictation of 6-8 new words and/or phrases, with the words/phrases read three times.
  2. There are two vocabulary lists for each lesson, (1) the one in the textbook, and (2) the one in the grammar notes (the grammar handouts you will get from the Segue course web site).  For the daily vocabulary quizzes, be sure you “recognize” by sight all words in the text, including, of course, the ones in the textbook vocabulary list and the words in the grammar notes vocabulary list. Any words in the text may appear in the sentence to be transcribed into Pinyin. AND, be sure you can "write out", from memory, the characters in the vocabulary list in the grammar notes.? The words to be dictated will all be chosen from the vocabulary list in the grammar notes handout. (The vocabulary practice in class will be focused on words in the vocabulary list in the grammar notes as well.)
  3. Going to bed and getting up early to set aside an hour or so before the first period to learn to write the required words has proven to some Level 2 students in the previous summers to be more efficient and effective than spending two or more hours to study the characters the day before.

4. Tips for pronunciation practice exercises (發音練習 / 发音练习 / fāyīn liànxí):

  1. All pronunciation practice exercises will be due on Monday and Wednesday nights.? You will get a feedback sheet from a teacher with your mistakes marked and patterns of mistakes noted.

5. Tips for reviewing (複習 / 复习 / fùxí):

  1. Learn the characters in the vocabulary lists in the grammar notes.
  2. Go over all grammar notes. Be sure you understand the meaning, the form and the function of the sentence patterns.
  3. While listening to the texts, read along aloud to reinforce your memory.

Format of weekly written tests (週考題型 / 周考题型 / zhōukǎo tíxíng):
Weight of each part may vary from test to test slightly. All weekly tests last 1.5 hours from 8:00 to 9:30 am in MBH338 and MBH438. If you read and write traditional characters, please go to MBH 338 to take the tests. If you use simplified characters, please go to MBH438 instead. Each student will get 1 of the 2 versions.

  1. Complete mini-dialogues with the words and/or sentence patterns provided. (30%)
  1. Multiple choice. (10%)
  1. Reading comprehension (10%)
  2. Translation from English to Chinese (35%)
  3. Writing (15%)

6. Getting your homework, etc. back
All graded daily quizzes, tests and written assignments, feedback sheets for oral exams, pronunciation practice exercises and compositions, and any other handouts will be put in (to be updated). Look for the Level II filing crate and the hanging folder with your name on it.

When to expect to get them back:
Vocabulary quizzes by 1:30 pm, same day
Written assignments by 8:30 pm, same day
Weekly oral exam feedback sheets by 8:30 pm, same day
First drafts of compositions by 10:30 pm, same day (Mondays)
Revised versions of compositions by 10:30 pm, same day (Wednesdays)
Pronunciation practice feedback by 10:30 pm, same day (Tuesdays and Thursdays)
Weekly tests by 1:30 pm, same day

Where to find them:
In the filing folder labeled with your Chinese name in the Level 2 filing crate.

7. IMC KEY
Use the IMC KEY as a reference for grammar exercises in the textbook.

8. 3rd week and 6th week one-on-one progress conferences
Save all your vocabulary quizzes, written assignments and tests. You will need to show the portfolio to your instructors when you meet with them to review your progress and learning strategies at the end of the 3rd and the 6th weeks during the one-one-one sessions in the afternoon.

9. "The Extra Mile" on Segue under “學習材料/学习材料/xuéxí cáiliào”
For all lessons, one or more links to web sites in Chinese related to the topic(s) of the texts, either in simplified characters or traditional, will be listed under each lesson in the “Study Materials” section of the Segue site.

Although we will not have time to go over these web sites closely in class together, you are strongly encouraged to explore on your own, AFTER you have mastered the new vocabulary and grammar points for the day. If you find yourself ready to go the "extra mile" then, do that by all means.  You may very well be surprised to find out how much you can understand, not how much you can not.

If you have questions or just would like to discuss what you have seen in these web sites with Level II instructors, please take advantage of meal time.  One-on-one sessions in the afternoon and office hours at night are reserved for questions DIRECTLY related to the textbooks and the supplementary texts.  Any instructor would be able to discuss the issues that interest you during meals and answer your questions.
